Why is it that in over 30 years, the phenomenon of Numbers Stations has gone almost totally unreported? What are the agencies behind the Numbers Stations, and why are the eastern European stations still on the air? Why does the Czech republic operate a Numbers Station 24 hours a day? How is it that Numbers Stations are allowed to interfere with essential radio services like air traffic control and shipping without having to answer to anybody? Why does the Swedish Rhapsody Numbers Station use a small girls voice?

These are just some of the questions that remain unanswered.

La maire Chantal Rouleau a dénoncé vigoureusement l’activité mafieuse dans sa circonscription. Deux conseillers municipaux s’en émeuvent.

[…] Deux conseillers municipaux issus d’Union Montréal, le parti du maire Gérald Tremblay, ont plutôt dénoncé le comportement de la mairesse Rouleau qu’ils perçoivent plutôt comme de l’opportunisme politique.

Pour Giovanni Rapanà et Maria Calderone, de telles accusations doivent se baser sur des faits. « Une administration sérieuse se base sur les faits et pas sur des allégations qui courent sur la rue (…) D’aller faire de la télévision, de la publicité, ce n’est pas ça, du courage. C’est avec des faits qu’on fait du bon travail », a déploré Maria Calderone.

La salle est toutefois restée muette devant les critiques formulées par les deux conseillers. Les encouragements se sont au contraire multipliés dans la salle.

Hmmm. Rapanà et Calderone sont des membres éminents de la communauté italienne de Montréal. S’ils ne sont pas proches d’intérêts mafieux, leur déclarations semblent quelque peu maladroites. Leur parti Union Montréal étant par ailleurs entâché de nombreux histoires de corruption, ils feraient mieux de se faire discrets sur le sujet.

Si la communauté italienne de Montréal se voulait exemplaire et se refaire une image mise à mal par des accointances avec la Mafia, ses représentants ne devrait pas barguigner avec la dénonciation de la corruption, quelle soit mafieuse ou pas. Mani pulite…

Quant le journaliste s’intéresse aux journalistes.

The media industry demands dramatic images, forcing photo journalists to seek out and portray drama in their subjects, even where circumstances lack it.

The public, on the other hand, is constantly overwhelmed by images portraying certain sides of a conflict, but often fail to consider a crucial element behind the scenes: the photographer.

This project aims to play with the creation and destruction of “drama” by breaking the taboo of the “invisible photographer”. By including him in the frame, it shows how the image-production process can generate similar photographs that are often over dramatized. In addition, the huge presence of the media turns the conflict into a show in which the photographer has his own role in choosing the dynamics and

thus becomes an actor.

This photo essay is a form of self-criticism by a photographer who became disillusioned by photo journalism after seeing how photo agencies push many colleagues into a hedonistic approach which does not encourage them to consider how their presence influences the events they witness and how their images are produced.

Photojournalists often deal with some of the nastiest issues in this world; they cannot afford not to think about the impact of their work.
